The August Yarn

Possum blend

A little about possum fibre. While possums are native to Australia they were introduced to New Zealand by fur traders in 19th century and have no natural predators there. Since then they have become New Zealands most invasive pest and the government has an ongoing culling program in place. Possum populations in New Zealand consume 21 thousand metric tonnes of vegetation every day resulting in habitat destruction for the endangered Kiwi bird and other native species. The yarn spun from possum fur is a by product of this culling program that turns what would otherwise be a waste product into a beautiful resource.

Possum fibres have a hollow structure which means they trap more air and retain more warmth. They are 55% warmer than Merino and 35% warmer than cashmere, soft to the touch and low pilling. They also make a breathable fabric which is shower repellent on the outside. Such a gorgeous and versatile fibre.

Fibre content 60% NZ Merino, 30% Possum, 10% Silk
100 gram skein 420m
Needle size 3.50 - 4.00mm recommended

This yarn looks like a fingering weight yarn with 420 per 100 grams, however it knits as a DK or 8 ply yarn so it actually very good value for money with 420 metres length in each skein. (It's like having two skeins of DK weight yarn) The possum gives it extra 'floof', body and warmth.  Only 3-4 skeins are needed for an adult size sweater.

RRP  $50.00 per skein
